Healthwatch York engaged with children and young people (CAYP) across York. They had limited feedback from children and young people and wanted to make sure their voices are heard and used to influence the delivery of services. From September 2019 to January 2020, they engaged with 17 groups, listening to young people about their experiences of health and social care. They also spoke to the adults working with these groups. They received over 300 responses.
The research looked at what children and young people felt worked well with health and social care and what could be improved. The report also explores children and young people’s views about GP services, mental health and support in schools. The research found that common themes included long waits, services not working well for young people, problems with access and a lack of consistency in approach. Children and young people also reported that it was difficult to find out about NHS and non-NHS services. Staff working with children and young people wanted to see services listening more to children and young people.
The report considers how the feedback could inform York’s Children and Young People’s Plan. There were 15 recommendations aimed at addressing the problems identified in the report.
