Healthwatch Wigan and Leigh working in partnership with Thinkahead to host an information event. They collected feedback from 54 people about their discharge experience with stroke services and what they would like to change.
The report found that people valued being as independent as possible after they are discharged from hospital. Some people thought they were discharged earlier than they wanted to be. It was found that support after discharge was often delayed and needing to be chased by patients. The most important things to a stroke patient post-discharge is the need for clear information both for themselves and for their family members and for that to be delivered in a way that is based on each person’s need and not what is dictated or set down as general information.
The recommendations included that more information and clearer communication should be given to patients preparing to be discharged, for example a basic information pack. Quicker access to community services offering therapies, social care and GP referrals need to occur.
