This report presents the findings from Healthwatch Manchester’s research on Manchester’s student population and their understanding and awareness of Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) available in the city.
Healthwatch Manchester held in-depth conversations with a total of 47 students currently studying at a range of universities and colleges in Manchester. Engagement took place across three sessions in central Manchester between November 2023 and February 2024.
The majority of students engaged are aware of the MHSS available to them. The majority also believe that their university of college provide support and information regarding those services.
However, the majority were not aware that they could use MHSS outside of their own university’s of college’s provision. Many revealed that despite being aware of MHSS being available, they did not know how to access them or where they are situated.
The report recommends:
- universities and colleges should promote MHSS services to students via social media as well as through other channels.
- universities and colleges should involve students in their methodology whereby MHSS are promoted in this way.
- Universities and colleges should include information regarding how to access MHSS including location and time of operation.
