During summer 2023, Healthwatch Oxfordshire carried out interviews of grassroots community members, as well as those from statutory, academic and not for profit organisations in the county. They wanted to hear about views on community research, and to make sure these views were heard in the development of a community research network in the county. They spoke to 10 people.
Community members told Healthwatch loud and clear that communities are tired of research ‘on them’ and not ‘with them’, and that things must change, if solutions to some of the pressing challenges are to be found. Based on the voices Healthwatch heard from community members, they identified four key principles that could underpin an Oxfordshire community research network.
- Nothing about us without us.
- Commit to action.
- Value lived experience and time.
- Be open, transparent and accountable.
