Summary of report content

Healthwatch Southend ran a mystery shopping exercise of signage at Southend University Hospital following feedback  from residents about difficulties finding their way around the Hospital in September 2023.

Key findings:

Some of the car parks’ signage appeared unclear/obscured or not there, including information about blue badge parking concessions and payment.

Some of the internal/external hospital signage appeared unclear or difficult to follow.  Some of the signs were very high up, and difficult for people with sight impairments to read.

On the positive side, the mystery shoppers encountered many friendly and helpful hospital staff and volunteers who asked if they cold help.

The report has 11 findings about website information, car park signage, site maps, support available, signage height and font size and temporary access signage.
