Young Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire volunteers (YHW) were invited to visit Bedford Hospital on Tuesday 1st August 2023, to
inspect and review several departments; Accident & Emergency, Pediatrics, Neonatal Wards and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(NICU). Ten relatives of children admitted to the ward were spoken to, in addition an unrecorded number of staff were spoken to.
There are recommendations in this report.
- On food to improve the offer for different needs, the quality, menu format, and drinks.
- On patients and carers to reduce waiting times, improve communication around waiting times, promoting play specialists.
- On staff increasing the number of staff, and look at introducing play specialists.
- In general making hospital maps easier to see, decoration, a phone in the peadiatric ward, smaller chairs for waiting children, clearer signage, information in different languages.
There are no follow up actions in this report.
However there is a response from the matron thanking the volunteers for their visit and taking on board suggestions.
