Healthwatch Bucks conducted a research project to understand the experiences of healthcare services of people from South Asian communities. They collected these views through one-to-one discussions, focus groups and an online survey and heard from a total of 52 people.
Most respondents received information about their appointment/treatment before going to hospital and generally comments about information provided were positive. However, not all the respondents were told that they could ask for an interpreter. A common theme from respondents was about long wait times at A&E, but during the appointments, people did not feel rushed. Despite the positive feedback about care, communication between staff and patients could be improved as some respondents felt as though they were not listened to.
The report concludes with recommendations to improve care provided to people from South Asian communities. Some of these include increasing awareness about support offered during appointments (e.g., interpreters) and develop cultural awareness training for all staff.
