Healthwatch Swindon wanted to find out the views of people with a substance use disorder on their barriers to accessing healthcare and what would help them access a new day service programme to support them and enable them to actively participate in the community.
People felt a day recovery programme would give them structure, focus and purpose, and help them recover. They wanted to be able to try different services avoiding having to jump through administrative hoops. They made suggestions as to what should be covered and where the service should be located.
The key barriers faced in accessing health and care services included access to NHS dentistry, lack of respect from staff, not realising they were will and access to GP appointments.
