Summary of report content

Healthwatch Kent carried out an Enter and View visit in August 2016 at St. Martin’s Hospital in Canterbury. The two reviewers visited the Fern and Samphire Wards which form part of the mental health trust. This was a return visit as on a previous occasion the Healthwatch representatives were unable to visit these wards.

The reviewers observed a good relationship between staff and patients with a relaxed and calm atmosphere. Communication between staff and residents was high and staff noticeably listened to patients during the visit. Residents in both wards took an active part in their care and attended daily morning meetings regarding their care plans.

Both wards provided a wide range of pastoral and occupational facilities designed to focus on residents’ care and safety; a calm room, TV room, family room for visitors, supported visits into town, shopping and cooking. All residents engaged in the facilities provided where they were able. Residents were also invited to share their views in weekly and monthly meetings. The results are on display boards in the communal areas.

The communal areas were bright, clean and provided a relaxing environment for residents. It was noted that the male ward (Samphire) was waiting for decoration to be completed. Some of the noticeboards were not visible as a result. Residents stated they felt supported by the friendly staff. They also highlighted the good food and the range of activities available. Staff felt supported by management and proud of the care and facilities provided. Healthwatch made several recommendations about the collection and sharing of feedback.
