Summary of report content

Healthwatch Suffolk undertook a research project to evaluate the health coaching training for professionals provided by West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. The evaluation was conducted through focus groups, case studies and a survey. They collected information and experiences from 91 people, including patients and health care professionals, between August 2022 and February 2023.

Some of the key benefits of a health coaching approach that professionals highlighted are that it empowers patients to find solutions that fit their needs, it builds rapport and communication methods with patients to encourage active listening, and it inspires professionals to think about the holistic needs of their patients. Of the professionals who completed the survey, 67% said that health coaching positively influenced their mindset and skills. Patients who completed the survey reported that with this approach, they felt involved in their care and that their input was valued.

However, professionals also provided insight about the challenges of this approach. Professionals are limited in time and capacity to apply this approach in their care. Health coaching also requires adaptation depending on job role and the sector. Additionally, formal techniques may not naturally mix with role requirements and assessments.

The report concluded with recommendations to further the development of the health coaching approach in Suffolk. These recommendations included supporting professionals to retain skills and knowledge post-training, support from line management, and improved communication about the offer of refresher training.
