Experiences of day opportunity services in Birmingham

Healthwatch Birmingham conducted a research project examining the day opportunities services in Birmingham and their effect on its users. Day opportunity services are activities that support working age adults with social skills, daily living, and nutrition. Between February and April 2022, 147 people responded to their survey.
76% of respondents use day opportunity services to reduce isolation and 65% use these services to improve health and well-being.
The feedback about these services are positive, with 68% of respondents saying they are very satisfied with the service they use. Additionally, 67% of respondents said there are no other services that they feel would meet their needs.
Carers and service users highlighted a number of benefits from these services, including feeling stimulated, improved health and well-being, and allowing service users to build long-lasting relationships and social connections.
The report concludes with recommendations to improve these services including reinstating the quality monitoring system, accommodate personal preferences and continue gaining feedback and insight on the quality of services to make improvements.
