Summary of report content

An announced visit to Alston View Nursing & Residential Home privately owned by MPS Care Group with places for 49 residents. There were no vacancies at the time of our visit. Information obtained from the MPS Care Group website states that the home provides care for people from the age of 65+ affected by old age, dementia and physical disability. The home was in the process of refurbishment and redecoration during visit.

4 staff, 1 relative and 8 residents were spoken to around a questionnaire covering 4 themes (Environment, Care, Nutrition and Activities) designed to gather information concerning residents overall experience of living at the home.

Observations

• The Home is situated on a main road and well signposted

• Refurbishment in progress so front external area limited

• The reception area well lit with a comprehensive notice board providing information about the daily menu, the CQC report and Complaints Procedure

• No information on key staff at the home

• Generally, communal areas were spacious, well lit and corridors were wide and with contrasting colour handrails

• Dining area displayed a written menu indicating a choice of 2 meals and staff prepared tables with fresh table linen. Insufficient seating for all residents

• Respondents were happy with their rooms and had privacy

• Majority of respondents felt treated with dignity and respect, could talk to staff and felt safe

• Respondents felt that they had a good choice of menu and drinks were available

• Mixed views on the range of activities, support given or choice offered

• One relative completed the friends and family questionnaire

• Staffing levels were good when on duty and staff were supported to carry out person centred care and given enough training to enable them to carry out their duties
