Summary of report content

Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) invited Healthwatch Gloucestershire to undertake a quality check relating to people’s experience of support planning for people with learning disabilities.

Face to face meetings were arranged with individuals who had been through the support planning process. The interviews were carried out in conversational style rather than working through a series of questions.

GCC was particularly keen to hear views on whether they were in control of the process and of the plan and also to ask what do you think could be better.

22 people agreed to share their experiences. There were some key themes which appeared in a number of peoples experiences and 8 are listed. People also shared their suggestions for improvements.

13 families also shared their experiences with key themes listed and suggestions for improvements provided.

Recommendation were made that information about support planning should be made available as a matter of course in a way that is accessible to them, they are offered clear choices throughout the process and that the support plan belongs to them, that the training programme is reviewed, particularly in relation to working with families, that GCC use the personal stories to gain greater insight into the experiences of people with learning disabilities.
