Summary of report content

In May 2017 Healthwatch representatives visited 24 Main Road, Dorrington. The purpose of the visit was to explore the quality of life experienced by residents. The visit was semi-announced.

24 Main Road is a home for 15 adults with learning disabilities aged between 23 and 60 years. The living accommodation is in two buildings, a two storey house and a bungalow with gardens, lawns, paved areas and a greenhouse.

The visit consisted of a tour of the buildings with the opportunity to talk to staff and to interact with and observe support workers and residents. Representatives spoke to one visitor. At the time of the visit some of the residents were shopping or taking part in activities in the local town. None of the residents in the home was able to verbally communicate with representatives.

The report provides feedback about the home, staffing, dignity and respect and choices around socialising, activities, the daily routine and the living space.

Recommendations suggested that the home continued to make the accommodation more homely and that staff ideas for everyday activities for residents were implemented. The home needed to display its complaints procedure and implement plans for increasing storage. Some of these recommendations were also made during a Healthwatch visit in July 2015.

Healthwatch Shropshire received an action plan from the Home’s Registered Manager in response to recommendations and this is available in the report.
