Representatives from Healthwatch Central West London visited the Princess Louise Care Home, a 45 bed nursing home. Two visits were undertaken, three months apart, with lunch being observed on the second visit.
The purpose of the visit was to gain information about the general environment of the care home by talking to patients, staff and visitors following a ‘requires improvement’ report from a CQC inspection.
Each visit was conducted by three Dignity Champions and over the two visits they spoke to a total of 16 individuals (10 patients, 4 staff and 2 visitors). The following areas were considered: Environment, Activities and Wellbeing, Care and Staff, Food and Meals.
The key findings showed that most residents were happy with the care they received and with the staff. The main complaints were about the meals they received. There is no on site kitchen with food pre-prepared off site. Comments were also made about how busy the staff were and that sometimes they had to wait for attention.
The management of the nursing home seem to be very proactive, quickly sorting out any problems when brought to their attention.
Recommendations were made to reassess the time scale for getting an onsite kitchen and also to see how volunteers could help supplement the staff team.
