Summary of report content

Partners were asked to speak to adult Islington residents who were registered with an Islington GP, had two or more conditions from a list of 120 conditions and who did not have English as a first language. A total of 63 local residents took part, none of whom were currently using a Personal Health Budget. 54 responded for themselves and 9 on behalf of someone for whom they cared.

Respondents were asked about:

• Relationships with health care professionals

o Who are they talking to about long-term conditions?

o Understanding of condition

o Working together

o Inclusion in discussions

o Being listened to

• Personal health budgets

o Knowledge of a personal health budget

o Choosing to use one

o What choices they would make

Findings:

• Choice

• Better standard of living

• Flexibility

• Language barriers reduced

• Use skills of family members

• Convenience of payment methods

Concerns raised:

• Quality of service

• Cost and having enough money allocated in budget

• Managing the budget

• Misuse of money for other aspects of life

• Future changes in services

• Lack of knowledge of services.
