Healthwatch Bolton were approached by Bolton GP Federation to develop public engagement to open up discussion with the public in the Chorley Road area of Bolton on the subject of neighbourhood level health services.
Engagement officers of Healthwatch Bolton carried out field research by way of a semi-structured questionnaire and informal one to one interviews. Results were analysed against three criteria: specific mention of services or clinicians (people), comments on patient behaviour and experience (attitude to care), comments about access and improvement (place).
61 people were interviewed in 5 venues in August 2017, total comments collected were 361 with 300 being used in the reported results. Findings were shown in three areas, what services might be available in a local hub, prevention and primary care.
Specific findings to Chorley Road area were also shown in three main areas, medicine review, access and general suggestions. Almost 40% of people interviewed had not had a medication review and details of how patients should request a review would be helpful. The need to access public transport to enable access to specialist healthcare remained constant.
A number of recommendations were made based on the results of the findings.
