Summary of report content

A report from Healthwatch Portsmouth in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth addressing poor housing, deprivation and the prevalence of asthma among residents of Portsmouth.

Data for this report was publicly available online; information was collected on electoral wards, asthma diagnosis, as well as average household income and housing tenure, and analysed using data analysis software.

The report concludes that the relationship between poor housing and ill health is multi-factorial and complex in nature. No significant association was observed between deprivation, poor housing and the prevalence of asthma in residents of all ages in Portsmouth and, due to high levels of data loss at both ward and CCG levels, findings should be viewed with caution.

The report recommends further research using regional data is undertaken, in order to explore any associations between poor housing and ill health among vulnerable population groups such as children and those aged 65+ years and to use national survey data in future studies in order to compare Portsmouth to other similar cities and regions.
