Summary of report content

Healthwatch Lancashire conducted an Enter and View visit at Cardinal Heenan House, a privately owned care home that provides care for the elderly and people affected by dementia. The purpose of the visit was to observe the service, consider how it may be improved and disseminate good practice.

Enter and View representatives made an announced visit on Tuesday 28th November 2017. They engaged with six residents, four staff and two relatives. Discussion was structured around four themes: environment, care, nutrition and activities, which were designed to gather information concerning residents overall experience of living at the home. The team also recorded their own observations using a traffic light scale to rate the areas.

Healthwatch highlighted a remarkable level of social integration between the facility and the community, with the facility hosting many village events and being at the “heart” of the community. Representatives observed that the environment was clean, homely and dementia-friendly with considerable effort put into personalising the communal spaces. Representatives also observed positive relationships between staff and residents and a comprehensive regular activity schedule incorporating film shows, music and gentle exercise, as well as communal activities such as a Christmas cake and coffee morning, a Christmas carol concert, and a seasonal Pantomime.

Based on the traffic light ratings, the Enter and View Representatives gave the home an overall Green rating.

There were no recommendations made to the provider and the report does not contain a provider response.
