Healthwatch Wirral conducted an Enter and View visit to Belvidere Nursing Home, an establishment providing nursing and residential care for up to 35 people located in a residential area of Wallasey, on the 14 Nov 2017.
This visit was carried out as part of a series of what have been named Green Visits. These visits are carried out in partnership with Local Elected Members in order to allow the Elected Members to see a Care Home 'in action'.
The Belvidere Nursing Home manager reported that they employ 47 staff including an activities coordinator and that they experience a very low staff turnover with many staff having been in post for a long time. The representatives were advises that care plans are person centred and that the home involves residents through monthly resident meetings, one of these meetings has resulted in the Home purchasing a minibus to enable outings.
The Representatives noted that the surroundings were comfortable and homely and that residents appeared to be enjoying the facilities. The visit encompassed a lunch service and it was noted that menus were visibly displayed and offered residents a choice of dishes. Staff were observed assisting with meals and the food is reported to look appetising; there are also snacks and refreshments readily available all day. Residents are risk assessed to allow those who are able to use a small residents kitchen.
Healthwatch Wirral noted: all areas were fresh with no unpleasant odours; staff were friendly and enthusiastic, caring and approachable; residents were actively engaged and happy and all looked well cared for and cheerful.
The recommendations included asking the Care Home to consider displaying Healthwatch leaflets; suggested investigating whether a Disability Blue Badge should be sought for ease of parking the minibus; and to consider exploring the local activity opportunities to support the work of the Activities Coordinator.
The provider response indicated that they would look into the considerations raised in the report.
