Summary of report content

Healthwatch Salford conducted an announced Enter and View visit to The Broughtons Care Home, a privately owned residential care home with space for 39 residents, on 15 February 2018.

Based on CQC ratings and local feedback, Healthwatch Salford have made Enter and View of local care homes a priority to contribute to the local strategic improvement plans for care homes. This visit was carried out as part of this priority work.

Authorised representatives conducted interviews with residents, their families, and staff at the care home to explore experiences of quality of care, safety, dignity, staff training and resident and family involvement. A proportion of the visit involved the authorised representatives walking around the public/communal areas and observing the surroundings.

Feedback from residents and staff was positive overall, with residents commenting that they enjoyed the mealtimes, that they felt able to take part in activities they enjoyed before moving to the home and that they had good and regular access to health professionals. It was noted that residents have the opportunity to influence change e.g. the Care Home used to provide a cooked breakfast, but after discussion at the regular residents meeting , this is an individual choice with other breakfast options now available.

The Enter and View Authorised Representatives noted observing staff entering a bathroom without knocking, and have been assured by the manager's response that this has been addressed through further training and supervision.

There were six recommendations made ranging from staff training to ensuring the residents and their families were more aware of the complaints procedure. All of the recommendations were acknowledged and addressed positively by the manager with an explanation of what had, or would be, implemented against each point.
