Summary of report content

Healthwatch Hackney conducted an announced Enter and View visit, at the Elderly Care Unit, Homerton University Hospital on 16 February 2018, because insight gathered through engagement across various health providers across Hackney suggested the unit may benefit from an independent review of the service.

The Elderly Care Unit (ECU) is a 56 bed ward for patients over 65 years old who require acute care and rehabilitation, the ward was fully occupied on the day of the Enter and View visit.

The 14 patients and one family member spoken to were generally positive about the ward with all those who had given a rating said it was a 4 out of 5 or higher. The Enter and View Authorised Representatives made a number of observations including the doors to the infection control bays being left open, and that the clutter in the corridors were a trip or fall risk.

Healthwatch Hackney made 18 recommendations, one of which appears to have been based on information about falls which it received prior to the visit, although the Enter and View Authorised Representatives do not appear to have discussed this concern with patients.

The response from the Hospital provides a plan outlining the action and the timeline for completion against all relevant recommendations.
