Summary of report content

Healthwatch Cumbria conducted an unannounced visit to East Croft Grange Residential Home, a 31 bed Home providing care and support to elderly residents with physical disabilities, on 6 February 2014.

The Authorised Representatives reported that there were a number of possible types of environment for residents to sit in but it appeared that most residents preferred to sit in a familiar place with people they have come to know. The one male resident reported feeling a little lonely as he did not have any male company.

There was a dining menu available in the front entrance on a notice board for visitors to view and all residents were asked mid-morning what they would like for lunch and again, mid afternoon, what they would like for dinner. The report recommends that the Home consider the use of Easy Read and pictorial guides for the menu to aid residents with impaired vision or understanding. The visiting team were told by one resident that they were allowed to eat in the lounge as they had difficulty in using cutlery and felt embarrassed if eating in the dining room with other residents. The staff accommodated the resident’s needs and supported their choice.

The comments from staff, residents and visiting family members were very positive.

There was no provider response included within the report.
