Summary of report content

Healthwatch Derby carried out an Enter and View visit to the Royal Derby Hospital on 16 April 2014.

This visit was part of Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust monthly PLACE Inspection (Patient Led Assessment of the Care Environment) and was therefore an unannounced visit.

During the tour, representatives visited the main entrance, the Macmillan Unit, Entrance 24, Wards 302, 303 and 304 making observations and were invited to sample a sample of the hospital lunch menu.

During the visit, observations were made and recorded with regards to signage not being clear, some toilet facilities that needed cleaning, some beds that were missing a TV, and a tablet that was dropped on the floor, most likely from the drugs trolley.

Everyone enjoyed their meals, they were hot and the texture and taste was good as was the presentation. The least favourite food was the pureed lamb, but everyone said the pureed sausage and chicken tasted like the real thing.

None of the surveys left by Healthwatch for the patients, their friends and family, other visitors and staff were returned.

The report also highlights evidence of good practice. Monthly PLACE inspections, Macmillan Unit providing information and support to patients affected by Cancer and their families, good communication between staff and patients, good signage, and patients happy with their meals were some of the services that were commended.

The report provides some recommendations. There is no response from the service provider.
