Healthwatch East Sussex and Healthwatch Brighton and Hove worked jointly to conduct Enter and View visits to four wards at the Royal Sussex County Hospital on the 19th January 2015.
Healthwatch Brighton and Hove and Healthwatch East Sussex agreed to undertake a joint visit to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in response to information that had been shared with both Healthwatch organisations since June 2014.
The summary of findings reported that: 36% of patients on the day of the visits were fit to leave hospital but were unable to largely due to social care packages not being in place; staff reported understaffing that sometimes compromised their ability to give comprehensive care; and that the wards were not routinely giving patients all the discharge information they needed.
The report made 7 recommendations which included the following themes: Delayed Transfers of Care; dementia care; staffing levels; mealtime support; discharge information; and staff training.
The Trust responded in detail to all recommendations which included ways of Healthwatch being further involved or having ongoing oversight of improvements.
