Healthwatch Cheshire West conducted an announced enter and view visit to Meadows Ward on 27 January 2015. The ward provides care for female elderly acute patients. Although it not considered a dementia ward, it often cares for patients with dementia. The visit was a follow up from a previous enter and view visit in March 2014, to identify whether recommendations had been implemented. On the day of the visit, the team engaged with 6 staff members, 3 relatives and 3 patients.
The visit found that only one of the five previous recommendations had been implemented. The improvement noted was that the pharmacy technician was now on the ward daily which had sped up the discharge process. The team found that the day room facilities had not been improved and that there was no dedicated staff member to organised activities for long term patients, particularly those with dementia. The issue with the main door staying open after use had not been resolved, nor had the problem with additional storage on the ward. The ward has been redecorated but the team felt that the environment still needed brightening.
The report did not make any recommendations but provide a response from the service provider suggesting that they are in the process of address the issues raised in the report.
