Healthwatch Cheshire West conducted an announced enter and view visit to Whetstone Hey on 12 February 2015. The home provides residential, non-nursing care for residents, and when available, respite care. On the day of the visit, the team engaged with 1 staff member, 1 resident and 2 relatives using survey methods and noted their observations of the home to inform the report.
The team reported mixed findings about the home. The building, although with a warm atmosphere, was said to be in need of refurbishment. The home has mainly part-time staff, something that the team found to impact the continuity of care such as the activities organisation. It was noted that there could be more staff on duty during the evening shifts to ensure that safety of the residents is ensured. Residents and relatives provided some positive feedback about the staff, some said they were pleased with their care and staff have made it easier for them.
The report recommended that the service provider considers the flooring of the home is improved to reduce risk of hazard.
The service provider responded disagreeing with the statements about the part time staff, but did suggest that the issues with the flooring will be explored.
