Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire conducted an announced Enter and View visit on 5th March 2015 to Greenacres Care Home. The home, which is owned by Quantum Care, has 42 single rooms. The home includes a day-centre and a re-enablement unit of eight beds. There are
two respite beds, the remainder being for the frail older people and dementia residents. The age range of residents was previously 65+ however this was recently reduced to 55+ for the reablement unit. Residents, family members and members of staff were spoken to.
The findings show that at the time of the visit, the home was operating to a good standard of care with regard to dignity and respect with staff interacting with residents positively and regularly, including checking on them if they appeared to be soporific. Residents looked tidy, clean and well cared for and those who spoke to representatives said they were comfortable at the home and quite happy. This was echoed by family members who spoke highly of the care. Staff appeared to be well trained and representatives were confident the residents were well cared for. Representatives noted that there is an ongoing programme of redecoration and refurbishment of the home and a recommendation was made for this to continue. It was noted that the two pedestal-type ashtrays in the residents’ garden smoking area were full to overflowing hence a recommendation that these are emptied more frequently. Residents felt the standard and variety of food served was very good and representatives felt the menu was balanced and nutritious and mealtimes were considered suitable. A recommendation was made that the menus be available in pictorial format for the benefit of residents with dementia. Residents are given the option of taking part in organised activities along with their relatives who were impressed with the range activities available. Under the previous management there had been a high turnover of staff, resulting in the use of agency staff. However, the manager has ensured that only one agency is used and consistent staff from the agency are sent to preserve continuity of care. Representatives were advised that the embargo on recruitment has now been lifted and more permanent staff will be employed. It was also recommended that the report be shared with residents and their relatives to allow them the opportunity to comment further should they wish to do so.
The service provider responded positively to the report and its recommendations taking on board all suggestions for improvement. The report gives examples of innovations and initiatives, such as the siting of a suggestions box in the foyer. The manager stated they were happy for the report to be published with no provider responses.
