Following the submission of the Phase 1 Support for Carers report in 2014, which highlighted the challenges and difficulties faced by carers in Staffordshire, the Phase 2 engagement is to continue looking at how ongoing support can be given to carers towards developing a better carer support systems in Staffordshire, specifically a Carers Hub. The data for this Phase was collected through a multi-methodological framework comprising of questionnaire surveys with 146 responses and focus groups with 9 responses.
The findings in this report explore a number of interesting themes which can be broadly categorised into three key areas: priority of issues for carers; issues underpinning support services; and the design and delivery of a Carers Hub. Young carers indicated that the highest priority was “managing at home” to support their caring role while Money and finance were particular issues of concern for those attempting to apply for financial benefits and those who are supported by the Carers Allowance.
Access to GP appointments when needed, gaining respite care and access to alternative and holistic therapies was found to be essential to improve the health and wellbeing of carers as well as provide carers with a life outside of caring.
The report makes seven recommendations, including offering more support through the carer’s hub, and commissioners engaging more with young carers to find out how to support them better. More online information, community led support such as face to face drop-in sessions and support groups to be available. The Carers Hub should be delivered through a multitude of approaches: a physical contact centre that is delivered locally to enhance accessibility; through a Freephone support system; provision of online information; and face-to-face drop ins and support groups.
