Patient experience review of cancer services in Cumbria

Summary of report content

Healthwatch Cumbria carried out a survey to better understand the concerns of patients and families in relation to the delivery of cancer services. The survey covered the referral system, treatment, outpatient appointments, and environment and facilities. The survey was available online and the team also conducted visits to 4 clinics. The team received 228 responses in total.

The findings highlighted several key issues, particularly with the referral system. It was noted that only 68% of respondents were seen by a specialist within 14 days and half of all respondents waited more than two weeks for a diagnosis confirmation. There were also several areas of concern raised in relation to treatment, with nearly 1 in 10 respondents feeling that their views were not taken into account when discussing treatment and nearly 1 in 5 respondents not being made aware of the long term effects of their treatment. Feedback on the environment and facilities was generally positive.

Healthwatch Cumbria made a number of recommendations in the report, including recommendations regarding reviews of GP assessment and referral practices, and service provider procedure reviews. There were no service provider responses included in this report.
