Healthwatch Worcestershire did an announced Enter and View visit to the St Johns Court Nursing Home 30th September 2015, to see how residents in these settings are being provided with meaningful activities that support their health and well-being.
St Johns Court had not applied for the Worcestershire Residential Dementia Service Standard at the time of the visit.
The team spoke to several residents and staff in the conservatory area of the home as an activity was already taking place with 9 residents while many of the other residents were in their rooms due to frailty.
The residents spoke well of the staff and felt they could have a joke with them, and they were helpful and friendly. There were comments though that reflected residents’ suggestion that the home was short staffed at times. The Healthwatch team observed that staff sometimes did not seem to be able to contact each other (maybe due to the size of the building). It was interesting to note that St John were developing rooms to act as a “pub” and a “pamper” area.
The Healthwatch team recommended that the home reassure themselves that sufficient staff are available to respond to residents who require assistance. Opportunities to go on trips and outings could be further promoted to residents. Funding could be identified to introduce technology that can be used to further individualise activities. A few more recommendations are present in the report.
The home’s response is detailed in the report.
