Dementia in Barnet

Healthwatch Barnet conducted a review examining resident’s experiences of dementia and the service provision in the borough. The team used focus groups, interviews and a case study to gather feedback from 170 residents and care staff. Desk-based research was used to find out about what services are available in Barnet for people with dementia.

The report offers an extensive background of dementia services in Barnet. From engagement with the local community, it was found that around a third of people with dementia are not know to primary care professionals and that related hospital admissions had tripled between 2014-15. The participants did not have information prior to diagnosis and suggested that professionals play a key role in the quality of care.

The report made a number of recommendations around raising awareness of dementia among primary care professionals and across ethnic minority communities, to offer community day services for early stage dementia and further involve patients and carers in decisions about their care. No service provider response is provided in the report.
