Summary of report content

Healthwatch Sheffield gave a small grant to SheffCare to undertake research with residents and family and staff in their care homes to find out about the impact of the Covid-19 lockdowns on care home residents and their families.  They spoke to 64 people in total.

Sheffcare's #SpeakUp report covers a range of topics important to care home residents and their families, including:

  • How care homes handled the pandemic, including relationships with care homes and staff, and how policies were implemented.

  • Experiences of visiting during Covid, including use of technology, window visits and pod visits.

  • The impact of lockdowns, including the experience of moving into a care home during the pandemic, concerns about decreased physical health and mobility, the emotional/mental health results of isolation, and the specific impact on people living with dementia.

  • The ongoing impact of Covid in care homes, including a desire for increased flexibility in policy-making, and the long-term impact of Covid on the care home environment.
