Summary of report content

Healthwatch Cornwall and Healthwatch Isles of Scilly engaged with at least 181 local people through online surveys, public engagement activities and four focus groups. These activities gathered people’s views on: the NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) priorities; what the priorities for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly should be; experiences of perinatal mental health services; and views on cancer services.

Common themes across all of the feedback focused on delivering person-centred care that was respectful of people’s views, wishes and time. There was a call to improve information sharing between services and patients, and to support people in accessing services when and where they needed it, paying particular attention to the challenges with travel – especially for those on the Isles of Scilly. People gave clear indications of their desire to have more technology enabled health interventions, so as to avoid the need to travel. The greater use of technology, to facilitate consultations or support within communities was also welcomed.

When looking at local priorities, people recognised the need to focus on prevention. This message was particularly extended to the provision of early years services and children’s mental health services. There was also a focus on enabling people to manage their own conditions, by ensuring they are sufficiently informed.

Next steps included: Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Health and Care Partnership engaging widely over coming months and aligning all engagement to the NHS LTP; ensuring people’s views inform NHS Kernow’s strategy for adult mental health services; NHS Kernow promoting the ways local people could have their say through established mental health support groups and networks, Healthwatch Cornwall, partners, the media and via social media platforms; and Healthwatch Cornwall working with NHS Kernow to ensure the views of people contained in this report are combined with their own engagement programme. As part of Healthwatch Cornwall’s normal working processes, progress of local plans to deliver the NHS LTP across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly will be reviewed.
