The five local Healthwatch have undertaken engagement with local people as part of the NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) network-wide project. 938 responses were collected for the general survey, 219 for the specific condition survey and 87 people attended 10 focus groups.
It was found that people wanted healthcare when they needed it without delay. They also valued health professionals who listen, give options, answer questions, have a caring manner and adapt communication methods for those with extra needs. People with specific conditions value the relationship they have with expert teams as it helps them better manage their care and stops them having to repeat their story. Mental health services need urgent investment and improvement. People want personalised goals from the NHS to become or stay healthy but also think government, business, schools and councils should also play a part. People want to keep their independence for as long as possible. People who are happy with digital technology want it more widely used by the NHS, while those who can’t use it (due to lack of skills or equipment, or poor broadband coverage) don’t want to become ‘second-class’ NHS citizens.
A response from the ICS is included.
