Healthwatch South Gloucestershire conducted an Enter and View visit in April 2019 to the Henderson Rehabilitation Unit. This was carried out to investigate patients’ experiences of Rehabilitation, Recovery and Reablement (3Rs) Discharge to Access Pathway 2. The enter and view (E and V) visit to Henderson Rehabilitation Unit concludes a twelve month programme of work implemented by Healthwatch South Gloucestershire to understand the quality of residents’ experiences following discharge from acute care settings.
The report found the unit to be clean and welcoming with caring and dedicated staff members. However, it was clear to see that there was a reduction in clinical expertise and medical interventions available to patients in the unit compared to those available previously at Thornbury Hospital. There were also reports of significant delays in patient discharge already occurring in this unit.
The Healthwatch team made a number of recommendations including that the service provider needs to clarify the process for accessing a consultant lead. The service provider was also asked to provide information on how many patients have had to be referred to the NHS Trust for medical interventions as a result of the fewer interventions at the unit. It was advised that information on how to address recruitment issues should also be provided.
A response from the service provider is included.
