Healthwatch Blackburn with Darwen formed a group to investigate Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). Adverse childhood experiences are traumatic events that can have negative, lasting effects on behaviour. Representatives completed ACE training and aimed to inform adults on how young people would like to be approached and supported when discussing ACEs.
The report details a creative way to educate young people of ACEs so that traumas are identified and the cycle can be broken. It was highlighted that adults should create an environment where the child feels comfortable and wants to talk about their feelings. Research shows that having an adult that you can speak to about your problems can reduce the negative effects of ACEs. Healthwatch Blackburn with Darwen suggested steps in which an individual can take to overcome the effects of ACES. For example, recognising your pain, recognising the situation and finding healthy coping strategies.
