Healthwatch Sunderland conducted an Enter and View visit to The Laurels Care Home on 15th April 2019. The Laurels Care Home has 50 beds and caters for people aged 60 years and over who require either general nursing care, general residential care or residential Enduring Mental Ill health (EMI) care.
Healthwatch Sunderland collated the responses to surveys gathered from residents, their family and friends, staff and managers, along with observations made during the Enter and View visit. These findings were scored against nine quality indicators for care homes, based on the degree to which the indicators were met.
Healthwatch Sunderland strongly agreed that the following indicators were met: staff with skills to do their jobs; a varied programme of activities; and regular access to health professionals. The Healthwatch team agreed that the following indicators were met: a strong visible management; good knowledge of each resident and their changing needs; quality, choice and flexibility around food and mealtimes; accommodation of residents’ personal, cultural and lifestyle needs; an open environment where feedback is actively sought and used; and a physical environment which is suitable for the needs of the residents. The Healthwatch team gave a neutral rating to the indicator of staff with time to do their jobs. This neutral rating indicates an equal mix of both positive and negative feedback, resulting in a neutral score overall. The report does not make any recommendations.
