Summary of report content

A group of young volunteers, known as Youthwatch, were asked to provide feedback by Denmark Street GP surgery regarding their waiting areas. The young volunteers observed the waiting areas within the main GP surgery and the annexe, which provided contraceptive and sexual health support for young people. The observtion was guided by a series of fixed criteria to look out for, such as display posters and a visually pleasing website.

It was observed that in the GP surgery, a wide variety of general posters and leaflets were available but not specifically for young people or mental health. Some posters and leaflets were out of date and were dull and non-colourful. The Annexe displayed relevant posters in colour and were easy to read. Again, there were general leaflets available but nor specifically for young people or mental health. The volunteers felt there was a good atmosphere with the radio playing. However, the area was difficult to navigate and to know which building to attend. The website was also difficult to navigate top find the relevant information. The page dedicated to young people's health was not inviting and the information provided did not have consistent formatting.

The recommendations made by the Youthwatch volunteers included that the surgery should expand their range of leaflets for younger people; all posters should be printed in colour; a clearer directional poster, with an image of the Annexe building should be placed next to the check in machine or as a pop up when you check in; and that the website should be reviewed to display up-to-date information and images to engage the audience.
