Healthwatch Wigan and Leigh conducted an Enter and View visit to Mahogany Care Home in January 2019. Semi structured interviews and questionnaires were conducted with 14 staff members and 11 residents and 3 visitors and this feedback was supplemented by observations made by the Enter and View representatives.
Observations included: there was a homely feel to the building and relevant information was clearly displayed; staff were friendly and positive when interacting with residents; there is a variety of activities offered to residents including external events, such as a dementia cafe;
Residents reported that the home caters for their individual needs and were happy that they had individual choice regarding food and activities. Visitors reported that they were happy with the service and care provided at the home but did not feel involved in the planning of activities. Staff reported that they were happy working at the home with access to additional training.
The recommendations to the service provider included that staff must monitor response times to call buzzers; actively inform families about the increased recruitment of permanent staff; and aim to actively involve families and visitors in planning activities provided by the home.
The service provider responded positively and outlined an action plan that highlighted that the recommendations were already being addressed.
