Healthwatch Havering conducted an unannounced Enter and View on Barleycroft care home in Romford care home in September 2018 and again in November 2019. This visit was arranged as a number of concerns raised about the home.
Sep 2018: Enter and View representatives reported that: state of premises had been improved but still lots to do such as updating IT system; performance of staff was being assessed and training arranged although some staff had left; no facilities for residents with communication difficulties; visits from therapy dog; uniform policy in place for all staff; regular meetings for staff to deal with immediate issues; arrangements made for advanced care planning and end of life care; care plans reviewed on monthly basis; weekly GP surgery; medication audits by pharmacist; analysis of falls data being undertaken; regular walk around by manager and deputy;
Enter and View representatives observed that lobby clean, tidy and bright; no formal reception; garden was becoming overgrown and little garden furniture; some reception areas better than others; witnessed resident being berated in front of others by staff; overall staff appeared to treat residents with respect; little activities; not all facilities working; residents looked clean
Nov 2018: Much improvement made by new manager; garden being overhauled; home still in some disrepair; residents appeared to be the same as Sep 2018 visit; new bed linen purchased but not yet distributed; painting being undertaken; placement of chairs not stimulating; strong odours from rooms and some reception rooms; toilet out of order for 8 weeks in one residents room and he had to relieve himself in a bottle; washing up left in kitchen kitchens needed to be updated; activities timetable on display although little stimulation for residents observe.
Recommendations for urgent maintenance; updated IT system; more cleaning staff; improved garden area; extensive redecorating; staff training; menus displayed in rooms; better communication for those not able to communicate verbally; more activities.
