Healthwatch North Yorkshire undertook engagement with the service users, carers and providers about mental health services to feed into the local CCG’s consultation on transforming mental health. They spoke to 20 people.
They found that there was a mixed experience of in-patient and community mental health services. People had a mixed experience of gaining access to mental health services. Many had services delivered to them by multiple agencies – where these were properly co-ordinated, they generally had a better experience. Many people experienced problems travelling to access these services in a largely rural area with limited public transport.
Although people wanted more services to be delivered in the community, there were times when they accepted that they needed in-patient care to be safe. For in-patients it was vital to have loved ones nearby and able to visit frequently to aid their recovery.
People had concerns about the CCG’s consultation itself – whether their views would help make a difference in relation to the location of services.
