Summary of report content

Healthwatch Shropshire conducted an Enter and View on Beech House Nursing Home, operated by Springcare Ltd, registered for 54 residents who require nursing care. The Enter and View was conducted on the 31st August 2017 and was arranged as part of Healthwatch Shropshire Enter and View schedule.

Observation by the Enter and View representatives and user and staff stories found that:

Environment: Parts of the home and the interiors required refurbishment and redesign. The ground floor of main house had a noticeable smell of urine. The provider stated the the carpets will be replaced and that the home was due for a refurbishment as part of its on going investment. All the bedrooms were bright and clean and had been individualised, with TVs, photos and various other personal

objects.

Personalised care: In general all the residents spoken to were positive about the quality and quantity of food available. As one person said regarding meals, “whatever you want you can have and as much as you want”. People's individual nutritional needs were being catered for and met. Activities are spread out within the three communal lounges with evidence of a range of social and health related activities, including trips in to the community.

Dignity and respect: Some concerns were raised regarding the effectiveness and response times to the call system. Staff treated people with respect and care when needing personal care and support with taking meals. The interaction between residents and staff appeared positive and friendly. Residents had good access to regular health services such as GP, dentist and optician.

The report contains recommendations regarding the call system, improving visual directions around the home and to start the refurbishment project as soon as possible. The provider responded to the recommendations and will improve the visual signage around the home, a new ground floor carpet has been fitted and the refurbishment programme has started.
