Enter and view: Gladstone Ward at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.

Healthwatch Shropshire conducted an Enter and View on the Gladstone Ward that is part of the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries based at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopedic Hospital. The visit was announced and carried out on the 22nd June 2017 as part of Healthwatch Shropshire's Enter and View schedule.

In summary we found, from speaking with patients and their visitors about their experience of being on the ward, that the staff and the care they give are very highly regarded and that patients feel very well supported. Almost all patients we spoke to said they were given the information they needed, were listened to and involved in on-going decisions about their care and treatment. Among the concerns expressed to us were the lack of activities at weekends which some patients felt might affect the continuity of their rehabilitation programmes, and the lack of opportunities for social interaction in the evenings and at weekends

Patients commented that: the quality, quality and variety of food was 'five star', 'lovely' and 'great choices'. That there were not a great range of activities, especially at the weekend, “Weekends are particularly tedious. I feel any progress I make during the week slips back again.” The support from staff was seen as very positive with comments like, “Staff are good. Know what they’re doing. Feels alright.” and “No matter what you ask them they’ll always come and help. I can’t

complain about a thing. Everyone’s very kind".

The report presented a range of recommendations to which the provider answered in full and reflected on changes to be made as a result of the report.
