Summary of report content

Healthwatch Staffordshire conducted a follow up Enter and View visit on Treetops Court Care Home - a residential and nursing home with 70 places for people with various support needs including physical disability, dementia and mental health needs - on 14th June 2017. The initial visit took place in August 2016 and resulted in a positive report.

The purpose of the visit was to follow up on the findings of a CQC inspection in August 2016 (report published in January 2017) which was less positive and highlighted several areas in need of improvement:

• Incidents of alleged abuse not being reported to local safeguarding authority.

• Gaps in medical administration records.

• Lack of effective staff training on dealing with challenging behaviour.

• Risk assessments for patients not being followed or not being updated.

• Systems to monitor quality of service were not always effective.

• Lack of documentation on: what checks were carried out by the manager, safeguarding incidents, episodes of challenging behaviour.

• Limited activities for service users.

The Enter and View representatives reported that:

• Incidents of alleged abuse are now cascaded appropriately, a new filing system is in place to aid manager review of incidents, and the manager and head of each unit discuss safeguarding issues every morning.

• A company has been employed by the provider to deliver training on how to deal with challenging behaviour; 12 staff members were receiving training during the follow up visit.

• Staff receive online training on Dementia.

• Risk assessments are reviewed monthly and care plans changed as necessary.

• Quality of service is monitored by building close relationships with family and having open discussions.

• There are two activity coordinators in place who have been allocated a budget and residents are consulted on the activities being arranged. Activities include a gardeners club, gentle exercise and singing.

No recommendations were made. The report acknowledges that active steps have been taken to achieve the improvements required by the CQC report.

The Manager reported that the representatives were friendly and the visit was a pleasant experience.
