Summary of report content

In August 2023, Healthwatch Enfield was commissioned by NHS North Central London Integrated Care Board (NCL ICB) to gather feedback on their proposal to make changes to the configuration of eye (ophthalmology) surgery services. The proposal has the potential to facilitate an additional 3,000 eye surgery procedures annually and significantly reduce waiting times for certain sightsaving surgeries by up to four weeks. From 4 September to 16 October 2023, they gathered feedback about 85 people. 

Issues raised by people include:

  • travel and transport, including costs, distance, time and need for someone to accompany them.
  • The need for the location to be accessible for people with sight problems
  • Better communications with patients
  • Support for vulnerable patients
  • Staff training.

The report contains 18 recommendations about travel, accessibility, communication, engagement and staff training.
