Summary of report content

Healthwatch Shropshire were approached by NHS England’s Health and Justice Team to go into Stoke Heath prison who are a seldom heard group in Shropshire to talk to the prisoners about their experience of health care within the prison setting.

Conducted through two focus groups one in 2016 and one in 2017 covering what was good about the services provided and how they could be improved. This was followed up with an annual quality visit where the experiences of the prisoners to inform their visit schedule and inspect the services on offer in the prisons.

The anonymised feedback was shared with the prison’s healthcare services so that they could use this patient experience to ensure their provision was meeting the needs of the prisoners.

The report covers prisons view on the quality of services provided to them for appointments, dentistry, continuity of care, complaints procedure, GP practice and mental health provision.
