Healthwatch Camden conducted an announced Enter and View visit to Wellesley Road Care Home, a residential home for frail elderly residents and with dementia, on 2nd November, 2016, as part of a series of pre-arranged visits to residential care homes across Camden.
HW Camden’s team used a set of prepared questions which follow the theme of the ten ‘Quality Indicators’ drawn up by Independent Age (a charity). The questions have been designed to draw out information on the ten key topics and have been tailored according to the audience. For each question, HW rates whether the home meets the indicator or not.
HW Camden was aware of some issues the home was having with staff retention which were due to a change of management and location of the home.
The report shows that
2 out of the 10 indicators were Fully met
1 out of the 10 was Not clear (there is more to be done)
3 out of the 10 was Yes, but …
3 out of the indicators was a Yes, partly…
Healthwatch Camden made 3 recommendations:
• Wellesley Road ensure that all staff are aware of the procedure to report changes in residents’ needs
• Each resident should have an individual activity care plan. There should be more feedback from residents about the activities offered.
• A more proactive and robust way of collecting feedback from resident and on informing relatives on the progress and update at the home.
The provider responded saying they intend to discuss residents’ changing needs with staff in supervision and staff meetings. A key worker system will be in place for the New Year.
Bed bound residents will have activity care plans in place and activities will be brought to them. Staff will attend training on why activities are important to the residents. All residents will have an activity care plan in place. Resident meetings will be held every 8 weeks to discuss activities. Information will be obtained from family and friends.
The provider also planned to display a notice board in the home providing information for visitors and residents. Monthly relatives meetings will be held and feedback to be shared. They also plan to provide a comments box in the home for feedback and hold group discussion with residents and staff.
The provider planned to have these actions carried out by the team leaders and the deputy manager by the target date of 3 March 2017.
