Summary of report content

In August 2026, Healthwatch Leicester and Leicestershire and Healthwatch Rutland carried out an Enter and View visit to the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service at Glenfield Hospital. The visit included observations of the department and a survey completed by 10 patients.

Patients were highly positive about the service and praised staff for being friendly, respectful and keeping them informed about their care. The unit was described as clean, bright and well organised, with many respondents reporting a quicker and more responsive experience than a traditional emergency department. However, the visit identified some challenges around accessibility, wayfinding, waiting space, wheelchair provision and the visibility of interpretation and support services. Recommendations focused on improving signage, privacy, accessibility and patient information. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust accepted the recommendations and outlined a programme of improvements, including environmental changes and planned expansion of the department.
