Summary of report content

Healthwatch Somerset carried out an enter and view visit to The Old Police House in Nunney on 1 June 2023 to understand residents’ experiences of living in the home and accessing care services. The home provides accommodation for people with learning disabilities and had five residents at the time of the visit. Healthwatch spoke with two residents, four relatives, three staff members and the manager during the visit.

The visit found a calm, welcoming and highly personalised environment where residents were supported to live according to their individual preferences. Staff demonstrated a strong understanding of each resident's communication needs and were observed treating people with dignity, respect and patience. Relatives consistently praised the quality of care, the management team and the positive relationships staff had developed with residents.

Residents were encouraged to maintain independence and take part in activities they enjoyed, including walks, outings, colouring, Lego, cooking and use of the home's multi-sensory immersive room. The home had good links with local healthcare services, including the GP practice, Complex Care Team, dental services and podiatry. Families valued the home's open-door policy and regular communication from management.

Healthwatch concluded that The Old Police House provided person-centred care in a homely and supportive environment. Recommendations included introducing a visual information board showing residents, staff and activities, sharing the benefits of the immersive room as good practice, and considering concerns raised by a relative regarding meal provision for staff.
